Matthew Harris, Ph. D. - Mormonism and race, the restriction/reinstatement of priesthood blessings

Matthew L. Harris is Professor of History and Director of Legal Studies at Colorado State University-Pueblo. He received a B.A. and M.A. in history from Brigham Young University and an M.Phil. and Ph.D., also in history, from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.
Much of Harris’s teaching and scholarship explores the intersectionality of religion and law, race and religion, civil rights, and right-wing extremism, particularly among religious groups. 
He is considered by many to be the leading scholar on race relations within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including the withholding of priesthood and temple privileges from black members. 
He is also the leading historian on politics within the church, including a shift within the rank and file membership toward ultra-conservatism during the Cold War era.
Dr. Harris comes on the podcast to discuss race relations within the church, Joseph Smith’s shifting views on slavery, Brigham Young’s institution of the Priesthood ban for black members, making the ban doctrine in 1949, a never before heard (An Edlow Exclusive) promise that Spencer W. Kimball made to Hugh B. Brown in 1975, lifting the ban on 1978, renouncing earlier race doctrines in 2013 and race relations within the current church.

Anthony “Riv” Rivera - War, Wrestling, Rock Bottom and the Comeback

nthony “Riv” Rivera is a military veteran who served in the Iraq war during the War on Terror. After returning from the war, he began training as a professional wrestler.
As the years progressed, mental health issues stemming from his time in war began to manifest. He turned to drugs and a party lifestyle to try and cope with PTSD as well as significant self loathing. He continued in a downward spiral until he found himself in jail. His rock bottom.
But that’s not the end of the story…hear about the come up…the success story…the ups and downs…from sleeping on a friends floor in Las Vegas to rising up to a Masters in Business and owning his own home.

Sonny Smith - Mormonism, Transgenderism and choosing between spiritual identity and gender identity

Sonny Smith is a 28 year old man who is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He has also dealt with Gender Dysphoria his entire life. For as long as he could remember, he felt as though he should have been born a woman.
As a young child in primary he gained a testimony that Jesus Christ was his savior and that the Book of Mormon was the word of God. However as he grew older he felt that his gender identity would soon clash with his faith.
Hear the story of coming out to his bishop (who had been instrumental in the passing of California Proposition 8), serving a mission while dealing with Gender Dysphoria, serving in the 82nd airborne, marriage, divorce, transitioning into a woman, de-transitioning back to being a man and the role of faith in his life as he continues to struggle with the cognitive dissonance of identifying as an LDS follower of Jesus Christ and identifying as a woman.

Producer David Page - Network News, politics and Diners, Drive Ins and Dives

David Page is a television producer who worked in investigative journalism and network news for NBC and ABC. He owns and operates Page Productions, his own production company.
As a producer for shows like Good Morning America and the Today Show, he was on the forefront of many historic events. He worked on the other side of the "Iron Curtain" and walked through the Berlin Wall on the day it was dismantled. He interviewed Muammar Gaddafi in the remains of his Tripoli home after a US bombing, he ate breakfast with Yasser Arafat and provided extensive coverage of the Romanian Civil War. 
After 15 years, he and his wife decided that Network News had changed too much and decided to move on to another passion, food. He began pitching shows all over when one off the cuff idea about "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives" struck the Food Network's fancy. Mr. Page produced the show for 11 seasons.

Johnny ”Butabi” Martin - Tragedy, Triumph and Mindset

Johnny “Butabi” Martin is a former baseball prospect, school sports coach and independent professional wrestler from Central California.
As a 7th grader, John Martin was called up from his middle school baseball team to play with the high school varisty team. He was a major prospect, and by freshman year, talks of the big leagues were already happening.
His whole life changed when a woodshop accident left him with crushed fingers on his throwing hand, leaving him an amputee. He spent time in the hospital as everyone told him things would be different.
Staring at all of his dreams crushed with his lost fingers, he fell into a depression…until one day he read a letter from a friend saying how sorry she was that his life was ruined…caused him to snap out of it. That day, he changed his mindset. He said to himself “this isn’t over.” That day he developed a saying that he uses to this day. “The story only ends one way.”
Hear the story of how he overcame, got back to playing ball using a tarp and a string, developed a successful wrestling career headlining some of the biggest shows in the world, and is now giving back to his community.

Kevin Evers - Trump Support, Black Lives Matter and the 2024 election

Kevin Evers is a former college basketball player with a degree in English Literature. Shortly after graduating he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Kevin (who has been interested in politics for as long as he can remember) is also an avid Trump Supporter. He voted for him in 2016 and 2020, but would not support a re-election bid in 2024.
 
He is also a former Sacramento Kings season ticket holder who withdrew his ticket holder status after a few instances involved with the Black Lives Matter organization.
 
Kevin comes on to discuss his background, basketball, politics, religion,Trump support, Black Lives Matter, woke culture, the Supreme Court and anything else we can throw out that will make you angry.
